Hydraulic presses are devices that use hydraulic cylinders to produce a compressive force. The press uses the hydraulic equivalent of a mechanical lever and was also known as the Bramah press, named after its inventor, Joseph Bramah, from England.

Joseph Bramah invented the hydraulic press and was also issued a patent for its invention in 1795.

The following process is followed by the press:

1) The operator first manually places the cutting die on top of the material, swings the arm or beam over the die.

2) The press arm descends and gently presses the die through the material.

The hydraulic press functions based on the Pascal’s principle, i.e. the pressure throughout a closed system is constant.

One part of the system is a piston acting as a pump, with a modest mechanical force acting on a small cross-sectional area; the other part is a piston with a larger area which generates a correspondingly larger mechanical force.

Only small-diameter tubing (which more easily resists pressure) is needed if the pump is separated from the press cylinder.
